How I got here

Mike is a Silicon Valley veteran with deep computer science, data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence expertise. 

Mike was CTO and cofounder (with Sean) of Outlier.ai, the world’s first automated data analysis platform. Outlier’s AI platform allowed Fortune 500 companies to identify hidden opportunities in their data by finding insights automatically. Outlier customers included Nike, Capital One, Johnson & Johnson, and Gartner named it a cool vendor. Backed by Emergence Capital, Ridge Ventures, Homebrew, and First Round Capital, Outlier was acquired in 2022.

Before Outlier, he led Engineering and Research functions for AltSchool, a leader in the education technology space. Mike was the founding data scientist (before that job title existed) at Aardvark, an innovative social search startup that Google acquired in 2010. At Google, he led a team of machine learning engineers and research scientists who designed and launched Google’s cross-product personalization platform.

Mike has publications and patents across various disciplines: cryptography, information retrieval, bioinformatics, computational structural biology, education technology, social networking, automated business intelligence, and clinical trial prediction.

Mike holds a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from the University of California, San Francisco, and a BS in Computer Science from Stanford University.
